You Don't Have to Om...

I’ve meditated for the last 365 days. It quickly became part of my daily routine, and the practice made a profound difference in my sense of self.

Meditation taught me to:

  • Block out the excess noise

  • Re-evaluate what success and happiness mean to me

  • Clearly define what I like and don’t like

  • Be a rebel / go against the grain

More importantly, meditation gave me an avenue to acknowledge my fears and established a path to move forward despite my trepidation. We all get stuck, and sometimes we don’t even know it. Taking chances is part of the ride – and not all risk involves potential physical or financial harm. Risks include telling someone how you really feel, saying no, taking a Soul Cycle class, or going to a restaurant alone.

Most days, I meditate for about five minutes in the morning, tracking my progress on the Calm app. In April, I began attending weekly 45-minute open meditation sessions at a Buddhist Center which is a short walk from my home. A few times a year, I drive to the Shenandoah Mountains for day-long silent meditation retreats.

You can meditate anywhere – on a bus, in an Uber or sitting quietly at your desk. You can do walking meditations through a park or down a city street.

You don’t have to buy anything to start a meditation practice. Time is your investment, but a few minutes a day is all you really need.
