Let The Good Times Roll
Creating a playlist is one of the best aspects of teaching fitness classes, and I consult the soundtrack of my youth for inspiration. It’s amazing how quickly an old song that I haven’t heard in years can instantly transport me back in time. My local classic rock station hosts a daily segment where they pick a year, and listeners call in with requests. 1980 was a recent year, and the song selection included Emotional Rescue by The Rolling Stones, Coming Up by Paul McCartney, Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd, and Misunderstanding by Genesis. It was eighth grade all over again.
I’m old-school when it comes to generating playlists, which originate from iTunes downloads – no Spotify Premium for me. With the exception of Portugal, The Man’s Feel It Still, classic rock, Motown’s greatest hits, and the early days of MTV are my staples. (I begged my mother to get cable television so I could watch the same 20 videos in MTV’s early rotation over and over again.)
Some lyrics truly resonate with me. Below are my favorites:
When your dreamboat
Turns out to be a footnote
– Elvis Costello (real name: Declan MacManus)
Show a little faith
There’s magic in the night
You ain’t a beauty
But hey, you’re alright
– Bruce Springsteen
Reason coexists with our insanity
– Billy Joel
Singles remind me of kisses
Albums remind me of plans
– Glenn Tilbrook, Chris Difford of Squeeze
Have some faith in the sound
– George Michael (real name: Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou)
Never look back
Walk tall, act fine – David Bowie (real name: David Jones)
